General Greek Mythology description Greek mythology remains one of the most popular and epic mythologies in existence today. For centuries, Greek tales and tragedies have enchanted the world and this continues to be the case.

Greek mythologies revolve around gods, heroes, and rituals that the ancient Greek followed and most of these were considered to be true. These myths explained many elements of the natural and physical world and phenomena that were in existence.

These myths also had some more somber tales and legends that were meant to serve as warnings of what could befall those who fall suit to more negative personality traits.

These myths also served as a connection to religion in ancient Greece. These fables explained how gods originated, their lives, afterlife and other elements of living. And ultimately, the myths also served as a reminder of the past-ancestors, wars, and exploration. These myths have been immortalized in the literature and arts of many different regions, leading to its continuing popularity. Roman Mythology is based on Greek Mythology for this reason we added a Roman name translation to a large number of gods and goddesses.

Throughout his career Carroll was fondest of painting the female figure, especially the nude. At that time controversy arose over whether the coveted Balch prize should be given to a conservative or a modern painting.

Most critics appreciated his harmonious color and fluid line. Antony Anderson of the Los Angeles Times wrote, "never was rhythm of line and form more alluringly rendered," and Vennerstrom Cannon of the La Jolla Journal thought it remarkable and worth the excursion to Los Angeles.

Parthenope exemplifies certain aesthetic and pseudoscientific ideas held by progressive artists during the period. Since Carroll usually focused on a single figure, he may have felt the need for a theoretical basis for the design of this, his most complex figure composition.

To assure a wellproportioned and harmonious arrangement, Carroll constructed the composition on the design principles of the "whirling square rectangle" as propounded by Jay Hambidge and his disciple George Bellows.

Carroll merely added white to create pastel tints for the background and skin. Even the short, striated brushwork in the background suggests that he sought to present his colors as if seen through a prism. After the centennial of the foremost place for American artists to show was no longer New York but Paris. By the late nineteenth century the Paris Salon was the most important exhibition space in the Western world.

Artists from many nations would submit their best works to its annual exhibition. Thousands of paintings, sculptures, and works on paper were presented at each Salon; the exhibition halls were so crowded that paintings were hung to the ceiling with sculptures scattered about. Since a painting might be skied hung near the ceilingmany artists painted on a large scale to ensure that their work could be seen no matter where it was placed.

Contrary to earlier periods, American painting in the late s was no longer dominated by a single aesthetic. Munich-school paintings—narrative scenes, often based on literature or history and painted in a dark palette—as well as small figure paintings in the realist tradition were popular in both France and the United States.

Large portraits represent the academic style that dominated official taste during this era. Bright, sun-drenched scenes by a more progressive group of artists, the impressionists are diametrically opposite in color, mood, and concept to muted tonalist and symbolist works. Whereas the impressionists celebrated contemporary life with all its transformations, the tonalists and symbolists created hazily illuminated, dreamlike imagery. Sculptures range from academic examples of idealized mythological imagery to expressions of the newer interest in the emotive potential of the human form.

Equestrian bronzes by Frederic Remington demonstrate that at the turn of the century there was a continuing enthusiasm for heroic depictions of the West despite the increased internationalism of American taste. Bibliography About the Era.
