Participating in a missions group certainly ranks as a life changing experience, but it takes a lot of preparation to stage a successful trip.
Many complex elements go into missions work, and one of the most prominent challenges is fundraising. Group members must be persistent in employing several proven tactics to effectively raise money for a missionary trip.
Establish goals. The missions group must evaluate what objectives it hopes to achieve and how much money will be necessary to realize the project. Calculate the costs of the trip, including transportation, lodging, food, materials and donations. Use this overall estimation of the trip cost to set an ultimate fundraising goal. Divide this total by the number of people on the mission's team. This will show how much money each member needs to raise on his own in order for the entire group to meet the goal.
Ask group members to brainstorm a list of contacts that they can ask for donations. This list should include as many people as possible. Write down the names and contact information of family, friends, work colleagues, dentists, doctors, teachers, coaches, pastors and other individuals who may be interested in making a charitable contribution.
Create a template letter for group members to send to their contacts. State all the important information about the missions trip and the overarching goals in the letter.
Leave some space at the bottom of the letter for each member to include a personal pitch explaining his role and how the potential donor can help.
Mail out letters to all of the contacts. Follow up several days later with emails to as many of the contacts as possible to confirm that the letters have arrived and remind contacts that their donations will be greatly appreciated. Ask members of the congregation to provide financial support during services if the missions team is part of a church. Have the reverend make announcements at each church service in the months and weeks leading up to the trip.
Set up a station where people can make donations after hearing the announcements. Consider additional forms of fundraising. Traditional methods such as a bake sale, car wash or pay-per-plate banquet can be effective if properly advertised and scaled to meet profit margins. Our mission as a corporation is to use our God given talent to secure and distribute financial resources to people, churches, and organizations for the Soul Mission of spreading God's word to all nations.
